Single-sex education , also known as single-gender education and gender-isolated education , is the practice of conducting education with male and female students attending separate classes, perhaps in separate buildings or schools. The practice of single-sex schooling was common before the 20th century, particularly in secondary and higher education. Single-sex education in many cultures is advocated on the basis of tradition as well as religion, and is practiced in many parts of the world. Recently, there has been a surge of interest and establishment of single-sex schools due to educational research. Motivations for single sex education range from religious ideas of sex segregation to beliefs that the sexes learn and behave differently, and, as such, they thrive in a single sex environment.

Organisms of many species are specialized into male and female varieties, each known as a sex. The gametes produced by an organism define its sex: males produce small gametes e. Individual organisms which produce both male and female gametes are termed hermaphroditic. Physical differences are often associated with the different sexes of an organism; these sexual dimorphisms can reflect the different reproductive pressures the sexes experience. For instance, mate choice and sexual selection can accelerate the evolution of physical differences between the sexes. Among humans and other mammals , males typically carry an X and a Y chromosome XY , whereas females typically carry two X chromosomes XX , which are a part of the XY sex-determination system. Other animals have various sex-determination systems , such as the ZW system in birds, the X0 system in insects, and various environmental systems , for example in reptiles and crustaceans.
The hymen is a thin piece of mucosal tissue that surrounds or partially covers the external vaginal opening. It forms part of the vulva , or external genitalia , and is similar in structure to the vagina. In children, a common appearance of the hymen is crescent -shaped, although many shapes are possible. During puberty , estrogen causes the hymen to change in appearance and become very elastic. The hymen can rip or tear during first penetrative intercourse , which usually results in pain and, sometimes, mild temporary bleeding or spotting.
