Poor Dick and Jane. This was too intriguing to pass up! Our copies arrived last week. And it was interesting. My fourth son had zero desire to read them. See Jane.

So many phonics-based readers were incredibly boring and my kids do not respond well to boring. Back when I went to elementary school Dick and Jane books were used. I loved those books and read them multiple times for fun. Apparently, they used the look-say method where sight words are emphasized. I tend to approach reading through a mixed approach with phonics being important, but I also introduce my kids to new sounds and words in the context of reading actual books whole language approach.
So The Adventures of Dick and Jane were before my time, no old jokes this week. Very much a single story. These stories as school books are significant because like textbooks we tend to believe unquestioningly what we read at school. I definitely did. I just learned what was in them so that I could do well on the test.
