Five hundred and eighty-one women over the age of 55 years with a benign disorder of the breast have been studied out of a total of 4, consecutive consultations for a perceived mammary problem. The relative age specific incidence of benign disorders of the breast dropped dramatically after menopause. Eighty per cent of older patients seen with these phenomena were between 55 and 69 years of age. Older women with benign disorders of the breast were more likely to have had a previous benign finding at biopsy or aspiration than younger patients. The use of hormonal supplements in these women was no different than that believed to occur in the regular population, except in the patients with cysts of the breast. The most common complaint was nodularity with or without pain.
Researchers reveal which benign breast disease is most likely to develop into cancer
Phyllodes tumors from Greek : phullon leaf , also cystosarcoma phyllodes , cystosarcoma phylloides and phylloides tumor , are typically large, fast-growing masses that form from the periductal stromal cells of the breast. This is predominantly a tumor of adult women, with very few examples reported in adolescents. Patients typically present with a firm, palpable mass. These tumors are very fast-growing, and can increase in size in just a few weeks. Occurrence is most common between the ages of 40 and 50, prior to menopause. This is about 15 years older than the typical age of patients with fibroadenoma , a condition with which phyllodes tumors may be confused.

Benign Breast Conditions
A swelling or lump produced in any part of the body due to abnormal growth of tissue is known as a tumor. A growth that is found within the breast tissue is known as a breast tumor. It may be non-cancerous benign or cancerous malignant. Although the detection of a breast tumor may be alarming for a woman because of the fear of breast cancer, most tumors of the breast are found to be non-cancerous. Nevertheless a thorough investigation is necessary to rule out malignancy.
Non-cancerous and cancerous breast lumps can be very different from each other when it comes to how they feel during a breast exam and what they look like in imaging tests. However, a number of benign breast changes mimic breast cancer , so it sometimes takes further testing to know for sure what's going on in your breast. How a breast mass feels can give a doctor a fairly good idea whether a lump is a breast cancer tumor or a benign mass. Cancerous masses in the breast are often very firm, like a rock or a carrot, and have an irregular shape and size. They are often fixed—they feel like they are attached to the skin or nearby tissue so that you can't move them around by pushing on them—but can be mobile.
